About our school

Joining us in 2020?

We can’t wait for the new school year. Check out the department’s #Ready2020 resources for hints, tips and checklists to make a great start.

The NSW Government is investing $6 billion over the next four years to deliver more than 170 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. In addition, a record $847 million is being spent on school maintenance over four years. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.

An exciting project is underway to construct the new Inner Sydney High School on the corner of Cleveland Street and Chalmers Street in Surry Hills. This new school will be a comprehensive high school focused on new and innovative ways of teaching and learning with an emphasis on technology, mobility and flexibility.

Enrolments for Term 1, 2020 will start as a staged approach to school operations with Year 7 students. Once all buildings are completed, the school will support up to 1,200 students across Year 7 to Year 12 over 14 storeys. This will include:

  • 47 permanent adaptable learning spaces
  • Multiple sporting and recreational spaces and shared use of Prince Alfred Park
  • 5 ‘STEAM’ focused floors including music, food technology and visual arts facilities.

Frequently asked questions

What will Inner Sydney High School look like?

Images on this website show the look of the new school. A design excellence competition was conducted to select a preferred concept design and head design consultant. On 27 April 2017 the then Minister for Education, the Hon Rob Stokes MP, announced Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (FJMT) as the winner of the design excellence competition and head design consultant for Inner Sydney High School.

What is happening to the heritage buildings on the Cleveland and Chalmers Street site?

The heritage buildings on the site are being retained and refurbished and are being integrated into the new school. The design includes technology-rich teaching and learning spaces, formal and informal gathering areas for teacher and student interaction, indoor and outdoor spaces, and welcoming meeting areas for parents and teachers. Students are learning in different ways in the 21st century and the design of the new school reflects innovative learning space design principles, while retaining the heritage buildings.
