Sport

At Inner Sydney High School, we offer a variety of sporting opportunities.

Our programs may include:

Sport House Groups

Freeman House

is yellow, the bright colour symbolising zest and success. It is named after the Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter, Cathy Freeman, and embodies the quality of persistence. Freeman stated that she started running at five years old because “the way I felt when I ran made me want to run more ... it made me feel free,” and explained that persistence means “being determined and not giving up when trying to achieve your goals.” Just as Freeman showed persistence throughout her career as an athlete and in her community work through the founding of the Cathy Freeman Foundation, members of Freeman House never give up. No matter how tired or how long the race, they persist. They are empowered by their grit and ability to work hard. Imagine the strength and energy of the kangaroo; that is Freeman House.

Goodes House

is red, the vibrant colour symbolising passion and power. It is named after the Brownlow Medal-winning AFL star, Adam Goodes, and embodies the quality of resilience. Goodes demonstrated resilience throughout his career as an athlete and through his anti-racism work. He used his influence as a professional footballer to challenge racism and do what was right, even when it came at great personal cost. Members of Goodes House bounce back from whatever hardships they face. They use their courage and their leadership to persevere, adapt and succeed. They are unbreakable. Picture the agility and stamina of the dingo; that is Goodes House.

Barty House

is blue, the cool colour symbolising thoughtfulness and clarity. It is named after the multiple Grand Slam-winning tennis player, Ashleigh Barty, and embodies the quality of wisdom. Barty believes that sport can teach us about life. She states, “Sport offers the chance to form friendships, be part of a team and learn life lessons. I am so grateful for everything sport has given me in my life and I would encourage everyone to get involved.” Just as Barty showed wisdom in taking a break from tennis when she needed to, and returning to it when she was ready, members of Barty House are clear-headed and wise. They gain strength in the knowledge that they can solve any problem through courage and confidence. As Barty explains “wisdom for me means having the confidence to trust myself and believe that I can achieve my dreams.” Picture the grace and power of the kookaburra; that is Barty House.

Thurston House

is green, the rich colour symbolising endurance and grace. It is named after the multiple award-winning NRL player, Johnathan Thurston, and embodies the value of strength. Just as Thurston has shown great strength throughout his career as an athlete, members of Thurston House always put in their best effort and support one another. They are courageous, tough and proud. Teamwork is everything to them, because they know that we are all stronger together. Imagine the might and vitality of the crocodile; that is Thurston House.
